Welcome to the Anna Loader Photography blog!
As a family photographer, I know capturing those perfect moments with your loved ones can be both rewarding and challenging. Here are seven fresh tricks to help you make the most out of your family photo sessions, ensuring everyone has a fun and memorable experience.
- Engage the Kids with Fun Poses Children can be unpredictable, but turning your photoshoot into a game can capture their natural joy and excitement. IDEAS: Try interactive poses like “Follow the Leader,” where kids mimic their parents’ actions, or “Tickle Attack,” where genuine laughter and smiles are guaranteed. Or try the “ring around a rosey for little kids and big kids. Big kids will start to laugh because of how adolescent it is for them! Or if they’re not digging that, ask them to play a game of tag in a small boundary. These playful moments create authentic, heartwarming photos.
- Use Props to Keep Kids Entertained Bringing a few favorite toys or props can keep children engaged and comfortable during the session. IDEAS: Bubbles, balloons, or even a beloved stuffed animal can add an element of fun and help kids relax. Props not only keep their attention but also add a unique touch to the photos.
- Prep Parents for a Smooth Session Before the shoot, have a chat with the parents about what to expect. Encourage them to remain relaxed and positive, as their energy sets the tone for the session. Share tips on coordinating outfits and remind them to bring snacks and water for the kids. Well-prepared parents contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable experience for everyone. I sell a welcome session for family photos on my Etsy, if you need help prepping the parents!
- Select the Perfect Location The right location can make a significant difference in your family photos. Choose a place where the family feels comfortable and can move around freely. Parks, beaches, and open fields offer beautiful backdrops and plenty of space for kids to run and play. A familiar location can also help everyone feel more at ease.
- Capture Candid Moments While posed photos are great, candid shots often capture the true essence of a family. Encourage interactions and let the family engage in activities they enjoy. Whether it’s playing a game, walking hand-in-hand, or sharing a joke, these genuine moments result in heartfelt photos that tell a story. The candid moments are TRULY what make for stunning family photos. Capture them in they’re element!
- Timing is Everything Schedule your session during a time when kids are typically in good spirits, usually after a nap or a meal. Early morning or late afternoon light, known as the golden hour, provides the best natural lighting for outdoor shoots. The right timing ensures better cooperation from the children and enhances the overall quality of the photos.
- Be Flexible and Patient Flexibility and patience are key when working with families, especially with young children. Be prepared for breaks, meltdowns, or unexpected moments. Embrace the spontaneity and go with the flow. Sometimes, the most memorable shots come from the unplanned moments that reflect real life.
Creating beautiful family photos is about more than just the perfect shot; it’s about capturing the love, laughter, and connections that make each family unique. By incorporating these seven tricks into your sessions, you’ll not only take stunning photos but also ensure that everyone has a fun and enjoyable experience.
